About that file extension
Most “SoundCloud to MP3” sites quietly hand you an M4A named .mp3. We don’t.
SoundCloud used to serve progressive MP3 streams. It mostly doesn’t any more — nearly every track is now AAC, delivered in an M4A container. That’s a straightforward improvement in audio quality per kilobyte, but it means a tool promising “MP3” has only three honest options: hand you the M4A and say so, actually re-encode it, or lie about the extension.
We do the first two and never the third. Take the M4A and you get SoundCloud’s own bytes, untouched, with tags written in the format M4A players actually read. Pick an MP3 chip and you get a real MP3 — decoded and re-encoded with LAME in your browser tab, then tagged with ID3 frames. Either way the extension on the file matches what’s inside it, which is what stops imports into iTunes and Rekordbox from breaking.
Converting is genuinely a second generation of lossy compression, so if your player handles AAC — anything made this decade does — the M4A is the better file. Reach for MP3 when something won’t take AAC: an older car stereo, a CDJ, a DAW from a few versions back.
| SoundCloud serves | Take the original | Or convert |
|---|---|---|
| Progressive MP3 | .mp3 with ID3 tags | Not offered — already MP3 |
| AAC, single file | .m4a with iTunes tags | .mp3 at 192, 256 or 320 |
| AAC, segmented stream (now the norm) | .m4a, reassembled for you | .mp3 at 192, 256 or 320 |
| Anything over 20 minutes | .m4a | Not offered — too large to decode in a tab |

Questions
Will I actually get an MP3?
Yes, if you pick one of the MP3 chips. SoundCloud itself retired almost all of its MP3 streams and now serves AAC, so we convert for you — in your own browser, with nothing uploaded anywhere. Free gives you 192 kbps; a Pro license unlocks 256 and 320. If you'd rather have the untouched original, the M4A option is one generation less lossy.
Is M4A worse than MP3?
No — at the same bitrate AAC generally sounds better than MP3. M4A is just the container. The only reason to prefer MP3 is compatibility with older hardware or DJ software that predates AAC support.
Where does the conversion happen?
In your browser tab, on your own CPU. The audio is never uploaded to a conversion server, never queued behind other people's jobs, and never sits on someone else's disk. It also means the encode is the slowest step — expect a few seconds of "Converting" on a normal track.
What bitrate do I get?
Whatever SoundCloud serves for that track — commonly AAC around 160 kbps, sometimes 96 kbps. A Pro license lets you pick the highest quality the track offers instead of taking the default.
Does the file keep its title and artwork?
Yes. We write ID3 frames into MP3 files and iTunes-style atoms into M4A files, plus 500×500 cover art, so the track is labelled correctly in your music app.
